Japanese curtain (noren) in cotton, koi carp and wave pattern
A cotton noren with a Japanese koi carp and wave pattern
This Japanese cotton curtain (noren) features two koi carp leaping over stylized waves, in shades of reddish-brown and beige on a navy blue background, with a gold calligraphic seal in the upper right corner.
In Japanese imagery, the carp swimming upstream and leaping over rapids symbolizes perseverance and success: this is the legend behind the fabric carp (koinobori) hoisted every spring for Children's Day.
Traditionally hung at the entrance of Japanese shops and homes, the noren marks the passage from one space to another while allowing air and light to circulate: hung in an entryway, a hallway, or a kitchen doorway, it adorns a threshold without the need for a closed door, and brings the tenacity of the carp swimming upstream to every passage.
A 100% cotton fabric, made in Japan
Composed of two cotton panels suspended by 5 fabric loops to be slipped onto a rod (not included), this noren parts easily when walking through: the koi carp pattern recomposes itself as soon as the two panels come back together. It measures 83 x 90 cm.
Made in Japan.
