Vintage turned and hand-painted wooden kokeshi, featuring a face with a downward gaze and black hair adorned with red and yellow touches at the temples. The body is decorated with four large, stylized red flowers with yellow centers and green foliage, arranged in a column along its entire height.

Born in the 19th century in the mountain villages of Tōhoku, kokeshis were handcrafted by woodturners (kijishi) and sold as souvenirs to visitors of hot springs (onsen), before becoming a symbol of wishes for health and happiness given to children.

This kokeshi measures 26 cm in height and bears the handwritten signature of its artist, Sakurai Yoshio (桜井良雄), on the back of its base.
