A mountain landscape hand-painted on a souvenir kokeshi

Vintage turned and hand-painted wooden kokeshi, decorated on the body with a mountain landscape (gray peak streaked with a white flow, snow or waterfall) accompanied by a calligraphed Japanese inscription.

The head, circled with red and black bands, features red and green floral motifs on each side of the face.

Born in the 19th century in the mountain villages of Tōhoku, kokeshi became an iconic souvenir throughout the 20th century, sold in hot spring resorts (onsen) all over Japan: this one comes from the Mount Tanigawa (谷川岳) area, a peak located on the border of Gunma and Niigata prefectures.

A 16 cm tall vintage kokeshi, signed on the base

This kokeshi measures 16 cm in height and bears a handwritten signature on the back of its base. Like all vintage kokeshi offered in our antique shop, this piece shows slight marks related to its age and years of storage: we invite you to carefully observe the photos before purchasing, as they faithfully reflect its condition.
